What is coded squelch? <top>Coded squelch is a sub-audible tone that is transmitted over the radio wave. Only those radios that are set to the same tone will send that signal to the radio's speaker. Other transmissions not carrying the tone are not sent to the speaker, eliminating unwanted transmissions from nearby users. Think of coded squelch operating like a garage door opener. Only those remote controls set to your door frequency will open your garage door. Note: Coded squelch does not prevent others from hearing your conversations! Is a license required to operate two-way radios? <top>Most small users can't wade through or won't be bothered with all the crap associated with licensing. However, per FCC regulations, all radios operating on business band frequencies 1 watt or more require a license. Instructions for obtaining a license are included in every Spirit radio. It is up to the user to obtain the license. (See our Licensing FAQ, for more information.) Family radios operating at 1/2 watt or less, do not require a license. A license is NOT required to purchase a radio... Do I need a license to operate a GMRS radio? <top>Yes. Before any station transmits on any GMRS authorized channel, the responsible party must obtain a license for a GMRS system. Application for a GMRS system license is made on FCC Form 574. There is a filing fee and you may contact the Consumer Assistance Branch at 1-800-322-1117 or refer to the Wireless Telecommunications Bureau Fee Filing Guide for information. The sections include (1) General Provisions, (2) Considerations When Planning a GMRS System, (3) Applying for a GMRS System License, (4) Managing a GMRS System and (5) Operating a GMRS Station.
